Decorating your baby’s nursery is one of the most exciting parts of waiting for your new arrival. But while there’s plenty of gorgeous items to coo over, it can be a daunting task.

Whether you know your baby’s sex and want to opt for traditional hues, or you’re planning to have gender-neutral nursery décor, there’s lots to consider.

We spoke to Emma Almgren, collection design manager at H&M Home Kids to get an expert’s opinion on things to look out for when decorating your child’s nursery...

'When we create our baby and kids collection, we have two key directions always at the top of our minds: adorable and functional,' explains Almgren. 'That is also what we inspire our customers to keep in mind when decorating a kids' space or a nursery.'From nursing chairs to play gyms, babies need a whole lot of stuff for such small people, but Almgren says having great storage is key: 'To succeed with a baby or kids' space, there are some important details to keep in mind. The first thing is to invest in large storage boxes. They are a must for quick touch-ups and for quick access to play.'

Almgren also urges parents not to forget to look down in a nursery since the floor is in use more often than you might think: 'The second thing is a comfortable rug, since kids almost never, no matter what age, stand or sit when they play. They have their best play moments lying on the floor,' Almgren says. So mamas, whether you plan to have a themed space such as a safari nursery or a woodland baby bedroom, or you’re opting for something simple, it’s worth keeping in mind that you and your little one will make your first precious memories there.

Almgren says it’s important to think of how a space makes you feel – perhaps it brings you calm, or maybe it feels cosy for those late-night feeds. 'We always apply optimistic design and creativity to bring pleasure and joy to our customers. We aim to design for an emotional value – considering what the customer will feel.'

From budget-friendly baby bedroom options to luxe pieces that’ll last your little one for years to come, we’ve rounded up the best nursery décor to add that finishing touch to your mini me’s new home.
