Upgrading your mattress is no small feat. Whether you're shopping for a cheap mattress, taking to sites like Reddit for a deep research dive before buying, or you're just not sure where to start, now's a great time to get started. Labor Day mattress sales bring some of the biggest discounts all year, and many brands started their sales early this year, giving you more time to research and shop.
The Popular Mechanics editors recently reviewed a bunch of mattresses in an effort to determine the best mattresses for each sleep need, from mattresses for back pain to cooling mattresses for hot sleepers. Tom Price, Associate Commerce Editor at Popular Mechanics, recommends you do your research before jumping into the mattress search. "Make sure to know your preferences and sizes beforehand. If you don't know where to start in searching for good brands, make sure to check out reviews or articles from trusted sources."
Once you know the mattress you want, it's time to find it for less. We searched the internet for the best early Labor Day mattress deals and listed them all below. From name brands like Tempur-Pedic to more budget-friendly picks like Allswell, you don't want to miss these deals (note that the prices listed are for queen sizes).
We'll keep this list updated as we approach Labor Day and more mattress prices drop, so you can click the "save article" button at the top of this page for easy access when you're ready to shop.
Take up to 20 percent off a new Tuft and Needle mattress during the brand's Labor Day deal, plus up to 40 percent off bedding, furniture and more. Popular Mechanics editors recommend the Mint Mattress, as it came out on top during their testing of the best memory foam mattress. It leans on the firmer side and has excelled edge support, plus gel pads and graphite fibers that will help keep you cool while you sleep.
An affordable mattress brand that measures up to more expensive competitors, Allswell offers bed-in-a-box mattresses in memory foam, classic coil, and hybrid options. The Original Allswell hybrid mattress is under $300 right now and combines cooling gel memory foam and a spring core to provide a supportive base with a soft top.
While Tempur-Pedic hasn't announced an official Labor Day sale just yet, there are a select handful of mattresses from the brand on sale on Amazon right now. This tall 13-inch mattress will give your bed a luxurious, hotel-like feel and you can choose between firm or soft cushioning. The memory foam mattress claims to help relieve and distribute pressure for a comfortable night's sleep.
Casper's Labor Day sale is already in full swing. You can shop up to 20 percent off their site right now, from mattresses to pillows to bed frames. The Wave Hybrid Mattress was Popular Mechanics's pick for the best hybrid mattress after testing. It's one of the newer models from the brand and features the brand's new Zoned Support system. The tester noted they felt the "head of the mattress is firmer, while the middle zone compresses further to cradle your midsection while aiding in spinal alignment.”
Take up to 33 percent off sitewide during Nectar's Labor Day sale for new customers. Fortunately, the brand's sale section (which is up to 40 percent off) is also well stocked, and includes the Premium Copper Mattress, which was Popular Mechanics's pick for best cooling mattress. If you're a big fan of memory foam you might find this pick on the firmer side, but the quilted cover is made with copper fibers that feel cool to the touch—great for hot sleepers.
Purple doesn't just make mattresses, they also make adjustable bases for their beds. During the Purple Labor Day sale, which has already kicked off, you can save up to $900 when you bundle your new mattress with a base. If you don't need the base, there's still a handful of mattresses that are discounted, including our favorite soft mattress, the Purple Restore Hybrid Mattress. While some soft mattresses leave you sunken in and over-heated, this one has a polymer grid that's designed to keep your body supported and prevent the mattress from sagging, allowing room for airflow.
If you can't decide just yet if a firm or soft mattress is right for you, you can test out both options with this "flippable" mattress from Layla. One side features a thick layer of plush memory foam for a softer feel while the other side features a thinner, more dense layer of foam for firm support. During Layla's Labor Day sale you can take up to $200 off a new mattress, and also save on mattress toppers, pillows and sheets.
If you're working with a tighter budget, Wayfair is an excellent place to start when it comes to saving on home goods. The online retailer even has their own mattress line, called Wayfair Sleep. Case in point: the 12-inch Medium Pillow Top Mattress comes in under $400 while it's on sale. It's listed as being right in the middle between soft and firm, and while we haven't tested this model first-hand, over 11,000 customers have given it a 5-star review.
Labor Day is a federal holiday that falls on the first Monday of September. This year, Labor Day lands on Monday, September 4. The three-day weekend has become a major shopping holiday, with noteworthy discounts on big-ticket items like appliances and mattresses.
According to Price,"buying a mattress on Labor Day is a great choice. Many individual brands as well as larger distributors like Walmart and Amazon hold sales during Labor Day weekend, so you should be able to find options you like at a discount." There are already early Labor Day mattress deals weeks before the holiday arrives, and we expect plenty more to land in the coming weeks. Whatever kind of mattress you're looking for, you should be able to find it for less this month.
