How to stop sofas from sagging: Simple 'technique' prevents 'significant wear'
The sofa is the focal point of any living space but its soft appearance won’t last forever.
While keeping cushions clean and tidy is an incredibly important chore, making sure it stays plump and as good as new is equally as important.
For those whose sofa cushions might be looking a bit sad, Rachel Fowle, head of aftercare at sofas, flooring and furniture company, ScS, has shared the key to “plump up” cushions and avoid sagging.
Rachel said to plump up cushions, homeowners need to first remove the outer covers so air can circulate around the filling.
She said: “When plumping any cushions on the sofa, the most important step is to unzip the outer covers.

“Doing so will encourage air to circulate back around the filling, resulting in a fluffy cushion.
“Make sure to remove the seat and back cushions when plumping, return them, and then plump the scatter cushions.
“To keep the sofa cushions looking presentable, repeat this as frequently as possible.”

Unfortunately, not all sofas come with removable seat and back cushions so in this case homeowners need to use a “gentle massaging technique”.
Massaging the cushions allows the filling to be distributed evenly. Chopping the top of the cushions will also help plump up the fibres and create a more high-end look.
When sofas are used regularly, they can sag in the most “sat-on” areas. To maximise how plump sofas look and to ensure even wear and tear, flip the seat and back cushions regularly.

Rachel added: “Doing this ensures the whole cushion is being sat on over even lengths of time, ultimately keeping the cushions in the best shape possible.”
Similarly, swapping cushions regularly and moving them to different locations will ensure they don’t get worn out too quickly.
Rachel said it’s “important” that one cushion isn’t used more regularly than others to prevent “significant wear”.
Using a vacuum on cushions with a brush attachment helps maintain the “structure and appearance” of the cushions.
Rachel added: “It is possible to achieve a similar result with simple hand movements, placing them side by side and brushing in an outwards motion, as though swimming in ‘breaststroke’.
“This will return the cushion to its original form, so they can be styled accordingly.”
